When the Berlin Wall came down, we dismissed the idea of separation walls as something from the past. Reality is exactly the opposite. There have never been so many walls. There are thousands of kilometres of fences, gates, barbed wire and barriers in the most distant and dissimilar parts of the world. This film tells the true stories of people living on both sides of very different walls. These are intimate and intense stories that show us that on both sides, we all share the same hopes, fears, thoughts and emotions; the same desire to survive.
WALLS FROM THE WORLD
During the 21st century there have been built or are under construction more kilometres of walls than ever in history. Some seek to fight violence, others to stop illegal immigration or the spread of disease; to prevent terrorism, to annex a territory. Some have been built to prevent or hinder civilians –not organized armies, from crossing, or to consecrate the annexation of territories on borders that are not recognized by the international community. Our movie was filmed at four of these walls, but it could have been filmed at any of these:
UNITED STATES AND MEXICO
Between the United States and Mexico there are containment fences, electronic sensors, motion sensors, walls and metallic fences. There are more than 1000 kilometres of a border wall between two countries with very different standards of living.
SPAIN AND MOROCCO
Between Spain and Morocco there are two six-metre-high parallel fences with barbed wire on top, underground cables for detecting sound and motion, night vision cameras and high-density lighting at night. There are 12 kilometres in Melilla and eight in Ceuta, the only physical border between two continents: Europe and Africa.
ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA
A similar fence sits at the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Hundreds of people try to cross it every day, digging small trenches under the fence and jumping in the Limpopo River to swim across.
